Do You Have What it takes to manage a Poker Team?

Managing a poker team can be a very rewarding challenge.  Team poker events are growing more popular and this can be a very thrilling form of play.  There are now some very attractive team poker tournaments offered from both online and traditional bricks and mortar casinos.

Recruiting Members

As the manager of the team you should have achieved a good level of poker skill and experience.  This will provide you with the tools you need to assess other players and see who could benefit your team.  Recruiting members is one of the most difficult tasks. You will need personalities that will not clash and playing styles that will complement each other.

For example you need to balance cool, consistent players against those who are willing to take a few risks.  This means you will have a good spread of skills to go into a team event with.  Too many risk takers could mean losing out early on in the event.  On the other hand too many cool and reserved players could mean you only achieve a runner up place.  Poker is both about keeping your head and also about taking some risks now and then.

Team Administration

As the team manager you will be in charge of the day-to-day tasks.  This means collecting money for entry fees, setting up team accounts for online events and submitting applications to events.  If you are attending an event away from home you will also need to sort out issues such as transport, accommodation and food.  As the manager it is your job to make sure all of these things are taken care of before you arrive so that you can all concentrate on the game.

If you manage a large poker team you may want to delegate some of the jobs to a few other trusted volunteers.  Don’t forget to contact the venue a few days before the event and double-check all the necessary jobs have been taken care of.  You don’t want to turn up only to find there are not enough rooms booked for everyone or worse still your application was not received.

Managing Team Members

You will be the main contact point for your poker team. Make sure they can all get hold of you easily if they have any questions.  Ask them to bring any problems or grievances directly to you.  This will help to maintain harmony in the group and maintain a good team relationship.
